My favorite way to add holiday cheer is with cooking potpourri! Let this festive pot simmer all day to keep your home smelling fresh and delicious.
We published this first Cooking potpourri recipe a few years ago on Instagram and it went absolutely viral and rightfully so. This holiday pot is not only gorgeous, but will make your house smell like citrus and pine all day long.
Simply simmer cut citrus, pine nuts, cloves and cranberries on the stove to release the wonderful aroma each ingredient has to offer.

Variations of hearth potpourri
There are so many different variations of holiday hearth potpourri! You can use whatever fruit you like as well as whatever whole spices you have on hand. It’s really all about the flavors you love.
One of my personal favorites is apple pie – apple slices, lemons, cinnamon sticks and whole cloves.
Other ingredients to try:
- lemon Tree
- Star anise
- Cinnamon sticks
- Apple juice
- Berry juice
Can I add more water once it’s all evaporated?
Adding water is a very good idea to make your pot simmer even longer! Feel free to keep adding water as it evaporates.
Check out our easy Dried Orange Garland recipe for another festive way to bring some holiday cheer into your home!
- 1 medium orange sliced
- 3 twigs of rosemary or pine
- ½ cup frozen or fresh cranberries
- 3 whole cloves
- 4 cups water
- Optional Materials
- 2-3 drops of pine essential oil
Add the orange slices, sprigs, cranberries and whole cloves to a small saucepan.
Cover the ingredients with water and let them boil over high heat.
We lower the fire. Simmer for the desired amount of time, adding water as needed to make sure the water doesn’t dissolve. Be careful not to leave simmering spices on the stove unattended.
Tips & Notes
- We recommend using pine boughs, but if you can’t find pine, use rosemary and pine essential oil for optimal holiday scent.
- As your water evaporates, feel free to add more to keep the delicious aroma coming!
